A standalone series that is more meta or indirect like Book of Shadows would be interesting but continuing series with newer elements would be welcomed too. There's definitely a lot of potential with this franchise but I just wish they'd do more with it. In the end it comes off as a safe and easily palatable sequel that didn't really take a lot of risks, so nothing really sets it apart from other modern found footage. You begin seeing glimpses of almost this wendigo looking creature and begin to wonder what exactly they are going for. The latter half of the film did feel a bit more atmospheric and suspenseful but at times it was almost too revealing. I thought that would have added some interesting parts if they went in that direction for a scene or two. One thing that surprisingly was ignored was using night vision or infrared tech. I feel the drone parts could have been utilized in a different way. The tech aspect of it was a bit underwhelming too. I don't think it was executed all that well.

The time bending element would have been much better served as more of subtle build up, versus just springing it at us all at once. Mainly, the characters just didn't have the same spark and chemistry. Heather is said to have had links with Blair Witch after miraculously disappearing 15 years ago. It would have been much better served as a standalone story, perhaps years later with the 2016 being more of a direct sequel.Īnyway, the 2016 had some good moments but failed to capture what made the 1999 film so unique. A group of reckless students comes to Black Hills Forest in Maryland to find the secret surrounding the mysterious disappearance of the sister of a member of the group, named Heather. It was definitely a more reasonable approach to a sequel than Book of Shadows, which was an oddly interesting take but when view as being billed as a sequel and released a year later it was disappointing. I feel that ultimately it was decent and worth a watch if you liked the original. The rest just made me eye roll so hard I think I pulled something.Īnyone else feel this way? I'm curious to hear your perspectives. I think the best part of the film was the tunnel sequence because I actually was made to feel uncomfortable. I fangirled hardcore when I saw the house set.then was disappointed when they start showing you what appears to be Heather, the witch, etc. There's also the whole bizarre sub plot with the time altering with Lane and Talia that never really gets realized, although attempts are made at the end.
This film goes for the cheap scare and actually shows you the Witch (although IMDB says it's one of the witch's victims). The focus is on the characters and their perception as to what is happening. One of the best parts of the first film is how little you see. I'm a huge found footage fan, love the original movie, and didn't mind Book of Shadows. Just finished watching Blair Witch (2016) on Prime.
